Selecting paint colors in a paint store is problematic for many people. The myriad of colors with so many shades and undertones is confusing and complicated by different lighting in the store so the colors don't look the same in your home or business. Seeing a color in another home, a magazine, or online does not mean it will look that good in your home with your things and lighting.
Taking pictures of your home on your phone or tablet is no help for color matching since screens do not duplicate actual colors, so may do more harm than good. Even taking samples of fabrics, tiles & granite to the store only gives a small idea of color but leaves out other things that might conflict with or enhance the choice. Check out our color consulting services to assist in making the best selections of paint for your interior or exterior.
Having 40 years in the design business, I have assisted many clients with varying tastes and lifestyles. Nothing pleases me more than helping a client achieve their design goals and beyond.

A long hallway with niches, lighting and artwork is more than a pathway to the conference room.
We'll usually walk thru and talk about your color ideas, take a look at the permanent colors in your spaces, and the relationship of the rooms to each other.
I make suggestions of colors, schemes, undertones, and values based upon our discussion and the things I see in the home or business.
You always have the final decision on the color choices.
I will record them on a list and provide a sample card of the colors.

My design skills started as a child.thanks to Crayola, my favorite 'toy'maker.
The creativity ultimately led to professional training and a BFA degree in interior design and minor in graphic arts from East Carolina University.
My grown-up job and life's vocation is interior design.
In 1980, I opened a full-service interior design business in Raleigh, NC, working with residential clients, builders, and light commercial projects.
We expanded it in 1986 with my husband to include custom home design and construction with a focus in solar and timberframe homes.

Everyone is aware of colors around them, but sometimes the lingo of color is confusing and often misused.
In working with you in a color consultation I will use words that refer to the lightness or darkness of a color, the pureness or saturation of a color, and the advancement or receding of a color.
The two main factors that influence how you see color are the light it is seen in and what you put it against.
Other colors affect color, making the undertones more pronounced when put next to certain colors.

Here are a few questions that are often asked and may help you understand the role of the designer.
If my builder has a person to help with selections for my home at no charge, shouldn't I just use them and then hire the designer to do the furniture and window treatments afterwards?.
That is an option, but sometimes it is a case of being "pennywise and pound foolish".
If the designer is brought into the decision-making early, often the decisions made are different.
As a designer, I look much farther down the road than just the immediate decision.
